What is hypogonadism?
Hypogonadism is a condition in which the body doesn't produce enough of the hormone testosterone. This can affect both males and females, but it's more common in men.
There are two main types of hypogonadism:
- Primary hypogonadism - This means there is a problem with the testes or ovaries that results in lower production of sex hormones. Causes can include genetic disorders, infections, trauma, tumors, and radiation therapy.
- Secondary hypogonadism - This type is caused by a problem with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus in the brain. These glands signal the gonads to produce hormones, so if they are damaged, hormone levels will be low.
Some common signs and symptoms of hypogonadism include:
- Low libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Fatigue and low energy
- Decreased muscle mass and strength
- Mood changes like depression
- Loss of body and facial hair
- Breast growth (in men)
How is hypogonadism diagnosed?
If hypogonadism is suspected, a doctor will check hormone levels through blood tests. Testosterone levels that are low or at the lower end of normal indicate hypogonadism. They may also examine the testes and do genetic tests or imaging scans to determine the underlying cause.
What is the treatment for hypogonadism?
- Testosterone replacement therapy - This is the most common treatment and involves getting testosterone through gels, injections, patches or pellets surgically implanted under the skin. It helps restore normal testosterone levels and relieves symptoms.
- Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) - This hormone stimulates the testes to produce testosterone and sperm. It is usually used along with testosterone therapy.
- Fertility treatments - Men with hypogonadism who want to have children may need assisted reproductive therapies like IVF.
